Who are Strive Insight?

Strive is a small but growing and award-winning consumer insight (market research) and consultancy business.

We work with some of the biggest names in business (including Vodafone, Shell, Western Union, BT, Jose Cuervo, eBay and Ray-Ban) helping them to use consumer insight to better understand their customers and markets and develop their brands and new products and services to ultimately be more successful. The type of work we do is generally strategic, answering some of our clients’ biggest questions such as ‘how can I enter this new market?’, ‘how can I better compete in this market?’, ‘what’s the next thing people are looking for?’.

We use a wide range of different data sources to help solve our clients’ challenges. Some of those sources are ‘quantitative’ (i.e. numbers based) and would include large scale surveys or analysing existing data including social and search data. Other sources are ‘qualitative’ and involve us having conversations with individuals either one-to-one or in groups using a variety of approaches, both online and in-person.

While we are UK based a lot of our work is international and covers the entire globe; in a typical year we would probably do research in over 20 countries and in the last few years have covered markets spanning major developed markets such as the US, Germany and France through to key markets such as China, Turkey, Mexico and Russia and then emerging markets such as the Philippines, South Africa, Colombia and even Jamaica.

Strive is now six years old as a business, with 13 current members of staff and plans to grow to 20 or more over the coming years. We are based in London, SE1 (near Waterloo, Southwark, Borough) in a former pub and within easy reach of train/tube, cafes, pubs and the river.

What’s the Role?

We are looking to hire 2 graduate trainees (or first job movers) to work alongside our existing team on a range of different projects. A typical project lasts 2-3 months and we work on between 3 and 5 at any one time depending on size / scale / timings so the mix of topics and approaches will constantly change.

Initially the role is very much a support role on projects while you learn about what we do and how we do it, but we want you to get involved in all aspects from designing programmes through to the end delivery with clients. Typical tasks on a project would include:

Taking a client brief and working out what the research programme should look like
Working with clients to understand their needs and what they want to achieve from the research
Writing survey questionnaires (for quantitative) or discussion guides (for qualitative) and designing any stimulus materials to test
Managing the interview process, checking survey scripts, monitoring progress, keeping the client informed (essentially project management)
Conducting qualitative interviews
Analysing the data or interviews, working out the story and recommendations, designing and writing up the presentation back to clients.
Within the analysis of quantitative data we’d get you trained in using analysis software so you can run the analysis, spot patterns and use the data to develop charted output
The majority of the training we would give would be ‘on the job’, but there would also be formal training on software packages, research approaches and also consultancy skills such as problem definition and storytelling.


What sort of person are we looking for?

As you might have gathered from the description of the role we are ideally looking for people that are comfortable with numbers and how to work with and interpret data, but also comfortable having conversations with people to find out what they think and feel.

All sorts of people with all sorts of backgrounds come into the insight / market research industry so there is no ‘ideal’ personal profile and no ‘ideal’ subject to have studied but in addition to the above, we find the following characteristics are often found in those that do well in the industry:

As you can see from the above, the agency environment is all about people working together to solve challenges for clients, but it’s also about being in an environment where you get to work with a great team of colleagues and learn and progress over time. You’ll also get the opportunity to bring or develop areas of interest within the insight world.


Package and Benefits

The starting salary is £26,000 and this would be reviewed up to twice a year. In addition the role includes the following once the probation period is passed:

25 days annual leave plus an extra 3 days over Xmas/New Year where we close the office
