A Video Vitae is a video version of a Curriculum Vitae (CV) and is becoming more and more recognised and used in the recruitment process by employers. Why should I record one? The video approach will give you the opportunity to showcase your skills to potential employers. Some employers favour this method as the candidate’s personality and presentation skills can be seen in a short effective clip. Watch our video below for some clear tips or follow our step-by-step guide below.

What is a Video Vitae?

Video Vitae Steps

Step 1 – Quality
Aim to record your video with a good quality device like a webcam or mobile phone. If using your mobile phone, please ensure you film in landscape.

Keep the setting in a well-lit room with clear lighting.

Step 2 – Length
Keep your recording concise but informative for the employer. Aim for a length of 1 – 2 minutes.

Step 3 – Intro
Hi / Hello I’m……… This is my video vitae and I want to pursue a career in……

Step 4 – Qualifications
Educational background, include: University attended & degree/degrees studied and grade (optional)
E.g. University of Brighton, Computing, 2:1.

Step 5 – Skills
Talk about any modules you carried out during your course. Mention some useful skills which you have developed. Talk about any projects carried out, interesting topics and theories you studied and personal achievements gained during your time of study.

E.g. familiar with codes such as C and Java. Projects have included using VHDL code to model digital systems.

Step 6 – Impact
Briefly talk about what difference you would make in a business if you were hired, and what type of industry you would ideally like to get into and why?

E.g. I can write VHDL code as efficiently as possible meaning; more resources can be saved as well as time. Getting into the technological industry will allow me to potentially write more sophisticated code and begin in web development projects, something I have always wanted to do.

Step 7 – Finalising
Rehearse your video vitae several times. Once you are happy with it you can:

Upload your video onto YouTube as “unlisted” and collect the generated URL link. This link can be copy and pasted and inserted under “CVs & Video Vitaes” when logged in on your dashboard.

Email us using a simple transfer website like “We Transfer” (if your file is too large) to send your video. Our team will add it to your profile right away:

That’s it your video can now be viewed by employers!
